Today we have the first trailer for Leonardo DiCaprio’s first collaboration with director Clint Eastwood, the crime biopic, J. Edgar, charting the life of the founder of the F.B.I., J. Edgar Hoover. The movie will explore Hoover’s complicated public and private lifestyle, from his relationship with his over-bearing mother (Judi Dench) to his questionable sexuality with second-hand man Clyde Tolson (Armie Hammer). Hoover was a man of many secrets, and also one who allowed power to corrupt him, becoming paranoid and controlling in a position of great power.

It certainly looks promising, shot in Eastwood’s usual beautiful cinematography. I’m not too sure what to make of DiCaprio’s accent from what’s present here, but he does seem to be aiming for a very awards friendly performance, in what I can only image to be a very demanding role. But no matter how hard he tries, I find him hard to take seriously in old man make up. He looks more like Phillip Seymour Hoffman then he does himself.
The film also stars Naomi Watts, Stephen Root, Jeffrey Donovan, Dermot Mulroney and Zach Grenier. It hits UK cinemas on January 20th 2012.
