Oren Peli, the director who brought us the first Paranormal Activity, has been working on Area 51 ever since his debut became such a huge hit. But that was a good couple of years ago now, and nothing new has come out about the progress of this movie for quite some time. No poster. No trailer. No nothing. It seem as shrouded in mystery as the real base itself.

But today, thanks to Empire Online, we have an update on the status of the found-footage horror Area 51 from its producer Jason Blum. “There’s still no release date,” he states, rather disappointingly. But there does seem to be a bit more hope that we will see it soon.  ” I anticipate the movie will be mostly done in three or four months.,”  continued Blum.  “Like
Paranormal Activity, we went back like fifty times for additional photography. The great thing about doing extra shooting for inexpensive movies is that the cost is low, so we screen and shoot and screen and shoot.”

“Oren and I were pulled away from Area 51 a lot for the second Paranormal,” Blum explains. “Once that came out we ramped up on Area 51 again.” When asked if he’s expecting a 2012 release though, Blum showed some promise: “Not for sure; it could be sooner…”

So we could see Area 51 within the year. Here’s hoping.
