The first trailer for the upcoming prequel/reboot,  Rise of the Planet of the Apes, has been unleashed online today. The film promises to be a prequel more to the Charlton Heston classic rather than the disappointing and strange 2003 Tim Burton remake.

The film incorporates the use of motion capture technology to present photo-realistic apes. The story takes place in modern-day San Francisco, deals with the consequences of scientists experiments with genetic engineering which leads to a race of super-intelligent primates. An uprising is soon planned out by the lead ape, Caesar (played by motion capture king, Andy Serkis). Check out the trailer below:

I don’t think the apes are really that photo-realistic, but then again it is the trailer, the effects may not be quite done yet. And there certainly is a strange ominous atmosphere in the trailer, even if the idea is a bit daft. I’ve never been a huge fan of the Planet of the Apes franchise, the Heston original was fairly decent, but I thought the Burton remake was cringe-worthingly bad. This may change my thoughts on the franchise though.

The Rupert Wyatt directed movie stars James Franco, Frieda Pinto, Brian Cox and John Lithgow and shall be released on August 5th.
