ComingSoon.net managed to find out new details from various sources concerning the mysterious movie Super 8, written and directed by J.J. Abrams and produced by Steven Spielberg due out next summer. The details concern the shooting location, which will take place this September in Weirton, West Virginia. the story is still being kept under wraps but a casting call sheet has been sent to Weirton, under a fake title.
The Associated Press have reported that Weirton residents have received letters on the filming, apparently moving forward under the fake title Darlings. The shoot is expected to take up to two-three months and that the plot revolves around a 14 year-old boy in 1979.
When this was originally reported, the open call casting was rumoured to be involved with Super 8 but was then said to actually be for a J.J. Abram’s produced remake of the 1980 film Little Darlings. But now it looks like Little Darlings may be a fake title for Super 8 and that the open casting is indeed for it.
The original casting sheet was as follows:
JOSH: Male 13-14. Josh is cute, but could be on the scrawny side – definitely not the school jock. Loveable, empathetic, smart and interesting. Must have a great sense of humor. Should have a Midwestern feel.
COLLIN: Male 13-14. Slightly, or more than slightly, overweight. Collin is confident, driven, optimistic and a natural leader. Must have a great sense of humor. Should have a Midwestern feel.
NATALIE: Female 13-14. A natural beauty – she is stunning, but not the “cheerleader” type. Strong and confident, but has an underlying sadness. Should have a Midwestern feel.
Then there came the news that Super 8 may be shooting under a number of fake titles Another report by WOWK has turned up a Paramount production with the title Wickham, described as being “about a group of teenagers who spend summers together and share the struggles of growing older.” Production is slated to begin in late September in Weirton, but is listed as going for less than a month. The link to this being a fake title is that Wickham is the surname of one of the creative executives at Abrams’ ‘Bad Robot’ Production company, Athena Wickham. Wickham’s casting sheet calls for “middle school and high school aged people, police, soldier and EMT types as well as townspeople.” The plot here is about a group of teens as well, but lists a train incident that ‘forces the town to come together’. There was of course a train wreck in the early teaser for the movie, so that does link.
I’m just going to take these details as strictly rumour, as you can never tell with Abrams as to what is actually going to be true and what is just being said to put people off the trail of what the actual movie may be about. I will definitely be keeping an eye on this one. Now for those of you haven’t seen it yet, here is that awesome teaser again:
