Rambo 5 may be dead, but in a recent interview with Ain’tItCoolNews to promote his latest film The Expendables, Stallone was asked the question would he ever go backwards with the franchise rather than forward. This was his response:

“I certainly think this is worth pondering. It’s intriguing to find the whys and wherefores of how people have become what they are. The traumas, the loss and the tragedy of being in Vietnam would certainly be a great challenge for a young actor, and it would be ironic that Rambo directs younger Rambo having played it for twenty years plus…”

While there is a part of thinking that Stallone should just put this franchise to rest, the idea of Rambo back in Vietnam harkening back to David Morrell’s original novel is an interesting prospect. And with Stallone directing a new actor in the role, I think it would probably work out very well as both an action flick and a war drama with a hefty emotional punch, more in the tone of the first and last movie of the Rambo franchise.

This is still only Stallone speculating but it will be interesting to see how this developes. But let’s get The Expendables out-of-the-way first, as that hits cinemas on August 13th.
